“JUST ME N' YOU” - Eugene O'neill
(From a child to a child)
We're outward bound for the Land of Dreams,—
Just me n'you.
Our course set by a star that gleams
For me n'you.
We've nailed our hope-flag to the mast,
Set sail and left behind the Past,
We know we'll reach our port at last,—
Just me n'you.
We're heading for the Land of Spain,—
Just me n'you.
You bet we won't come back again,—
Not me n'you.
We'll stay where hearts may keep the Spring,
Where Love rules over everything,
Where all the birds are glad to sing
To me n'you.
There won't be no one there at all
But me n'you.
In summer, winter, spring or fall,—
Just me n'you.
Of course the home folk all will grin
And mock as jealously as sin,
But we will never care a pin,—
Not me n'you.
We'll build our castle by the sea,—
Just me n'you.
Upon our beach we'll wander free,—
Just me n'you.
And then, and then—just think of this!—
We'll kiss, n'kiss, n'kiss, n'kiss,
N'kiss, n'kiss, and hug n'kiss,—
Just me n'you.
Oh, that'll be a happy time
For me n'you.
When all of life'll be in rhyme
For me n'you.
Though God now seems to hesitate,
The days move at so slow a rate,
We know He'll pay us for our wait,—
Just me n'you.
Just me n'you,
Just you n'me,
Till life wake to
Eternity!
